Cusqueños strike over new airport in Chinchero

(PeruReports) Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete airport, located within the city of 400,000 people, is not large enough to accommodate the influx of tourists visiting the Machu Picchu ruins. An average of 4,460 daily tourists visited Machu Picchu from January through October 2016, an 11% increase from the same period in 2015, according to Peru’s tourism ministry.

The new airport, slated to open in 2020, will be located an hour outside Cusco in the Chinchero district. The Chinchero airport will be Peru’s second largest and able to accommodate international flights from Miami as well as other South American capitals.

The locals in the area want construction to begin. They believe that international flight access will increase tourism in the Machu Picchu area, bringing them more business. If they do strike, it would be the 3rd time in a year. Want to get the government's attention? Simply shut down Machu Picchu which brings in an estimated $1M per day.

I'm clearly not a local so my opinion shouldn't carry any weight, but why build an airport in the beautiful Chinchero area and spoil the views and/or the culture? Plus, I'm already having a hard enough time convincing people to go to Lima. It has a lot to offer.

Will be interesting to see what happens.
